"the mind is like an insect's wing, it is fragile and easily broken" -Unknown (II)

In my quest to create an illustrated medical journal I have been researching the different articles i have chosen, the first about synthetic blood, and the second about the psychological triggers of depression.

I found the quote above while I have been researching and have decided to incorporate the insect wing motif into my work, the triangle represents the consciousness as triangles can be associated with religious belief (e.g. the holy trinity) and the mind, body and the soul. The shape also refers to the patterns made by writing the chemical symbols for the elements found in the body.

digital work in progress.

work in progress

this is one of my more finalised images.

some scans and musings

Right now I am trying to tell a ghost story through images of the brain, I'm hoping this is making this project a little more grounded, and yes, a little less silly. I think that through studying the physical and psychological effect of fear, I can come to a better understanding to why I, despite not believing in ghosts, find this sort of thing so compelling, and why I still need to get into bed as quickly as possible at night so that something doesn't grab my ankles.

here are some beautiful images of the brain that I'm working from.

Project Development

In my research into paranormal happenings I have came across some images which show the activity of the brain when faced with fear, and also during the REM stage of sleep, and these scans include those of people experiencing nightmares. This research has really interested me, as many of the images are beautiful in their own right. With this in mind, I am now choosing to study and represent the idea that "this is what your nightmares look like". I am choosing the brain in states of fear and REM so that I can make my project into a study of the physicality of fear.

enjoy this, it has classical music!

Personal Experiences

As I'm collating a book of people's personal accounts of ghosts and nightmares, I've been researching by interviewing and collecting their stories in handwritten, recorded and e-mail formats. I've already came across quite a few really descriptive and interesting stories but I need more, so, if anyone would like to share their experiences with me either leave a comment below or contact me via email, which can be found in the contact me section, and because I am expecting such a high volume of replies, ahem, I'm hoping to lure you all with the fact you will be part of a very nice project, and your story will inform my ideas.

Self Defined Project

Here are a few photographs of ghosts, including staged ones, from around the victorian period. I'm thinking that soon i'm going to dig out my film camera and have a go at some double exposure soon.

Self Defined Project

For my self defined project I have chosen to look at the paranormal, focusing on how ghost stories have been portrayed throughout time, mainly focusing on the Victorian craze for seances and magic and our modern way of dealing with the unknown. The fact that despite most of the world no longer believing in ghosts, paranormal happenings are still reported in the media.

I've found a few reports on paranormal activity here.

A few quotes from the article that stuck out:

"Ashtrays have been flung through the air and they once came home to find their dog lying motionless at the bottom of the stairs, with serious injuries.

Vets said it was as if their pet, who later died, had been pushed down the stairs in their home."

"The priest said we definitely shouldn’t stay."

eugh... all I think when I read this sort of thing is what gives a story like this weight over others to be seriously reported, while others are basically like "lol this idiot thinks she has a ghost, what a fucking moron".

Typeface

here is probably the best variation of my font idea, the idea was to make it in the style of a 60's and 70's medical textbook, as for its use within the industry I think it would suit specific use such as in a poster or signage for museums like the huntarian at the royal college of surgeons or the natural history museum.

Update

here is a shot of the typography I've been working on, its unfinished and still needs a bit of fiddling with in photoshop.

some awesome examples of type

I love some of the creativity that can be achieved through using only type, here are a couple of examples that I think represent the text best.
